Why So Many Women Struggle With Weight Gain and Low Energy After 40

Adult and baby in water, baby in striped purple suit touches adult's arm, creating a peaceful, tender moment.

If you’re a woman in your late 30s or early 40s and suddenly feel like your body has changed overnight, you’re not imagining it.

As a registered dietitian and life coach, this is one of the most common conversations I have with women in my practice.

They usually start with something like this:

"I used to be able to eat whatever I wanted."

"I never had to try so hard to with workouts and nutrition."

"Now I feel like my body has completely changed."

And often, it has.

Many women begin noticing perimenopause weight gain, lower energy, and more intense cravings around age 40 — especially while juggling careers, children, and a busy household.

But the truth is, the problem is rarely just about food.

The Story I Hear All the Time

A woman sits across from me and tells me her story.

She works a full-time job, often sitting at a desk most of the day.

She has kids — usually young ones — who require constant energy and attention.

She’s focused on making sure everyone else is eating well and taken care of.

But when it comes to her own health, she feels like she’s running on empty.

She might tell me something like:

"I’m exhausted before I even start trying to play with my kids."

That’s the moment when the emotion usually comes out.

Because what she really wants isn’t just to lose weight.

She wants to feel like herself again.

Why the Struggle With Weight Gain Happens Around 40

Many women assume they simply lost discipline.

But biologically, a lot is happening during this stage of life.

Around age 40, many women begin entering perimenopause, the hormonal transition leading up to menopause that contributes to this struggle with weight gain.

During this time, you may notice:

• slower metabolism

• increased fat storage

• stronger food cravings

• fatigue and brain fog

• disrupted sleep

• increased stress levels

Combine that with a sedentary job, raising kids, and constant mental load, and it’s easy to see why health habits become harder to maintain.

Why Traditional Diets Don’t Work

Most women try to fix the problem by starting another diet or workout program.

But what they actually need is a sustainable lifestyle strategy that supports:

• their hormones

• their energy levels

• their mental health

• their busy schedules

Nutrition alone isn’t the whole answer.

This is why I combine nutrition counseling with life coaching in my work.

Because lasting change happens when we support both the body and the mind.
