The Health Conversation Nobody Is Having
Here's something I want you to sit with for a second.
When you get sick, feel rundown, or can't seem to shake a nagging symptom — what's the first place you look for answers?
If you're like most of us, you go external.
You Google your symptoms.
You check your macros.
You wonder if you caught something, if it's genetic, if you need a new supplement.
What if the answer isn't outside of you at all?
What if the missing piece to your health — the reason your body won't cooperate no matter what you try — is a deep disconnection from your own inner wisdom?
That's exactly what we're diving into in this week's episode of Fuel the Fire. And Fire Fam, this one hit differently, even for me. I was deep in my morning meditation when I started outlining this episode, and I genuinely felt everything I'm sharing with you land in my own body as I wrote it.
Because this? This is the work that changes everything.
What Happens When You Stop Listening to Your Body
I want to tell you a little bit about my own journey here, because I think it'll resonate more than any clinical definition.
In my 20s, I was a high-achiever. Doing all the "right" things. Following the path my family envisioned for me. Successful by every external measure.
And yet? I was anxious all the time. That nagging feeling that I needed to do more, be more — it never went away. In fact, the more I achieved, the louder the anxiety got. My body was screaming something my logical brain refused to hear.
That disconnect started showing up in ways I couldn't ignore:
Digestive issues
Trouble sleeping
Indecisiveness and self-doubt
Chronic inflammation and joint pain
Binge eating (yes, even as a dietitian — more on that in a minute)
Leaning into vices like scrolling, overeating, excessive coffee
Sound familiar?
We normalize these things.
We write them off.
But these aren't random.
These are your body's way of saying: something is off. Come back home to yourself.
My Binge Eating Wake-Up Call
I've shared this before, but it bears repeating: there was a period in my life where I was really struggling with binge eating. And I was so ashamed of it — because I'm a dietitian. Because I was the fitness girl. Because I thought I should know better.
I'd stand at the pantry cycling through snacks, something sweet then something salty then back again, never feeling satisfied. Not because I was physically hungry. But because I was deeply, profoundly disconnected from what was actually going on inside me.
Nobody had ever taught me how to process my emotions or trust my body's signals. I was running on logic, conditioning, and willpower — and it wasn't working.
That's when I started getting serious about something Western healthcare almost never talks about: intuition as a health practice.
The 4 Ways Your Intuition Is Already Talking to You
Here's the thing — your intuition isn't silent. It's been speaking to you your whole life. You've just been too busy, too stimulated, or too conditioned to hear it.
There are four channels through which intuitive messages come through (in the spiritual space, these are called the "four Clairs"), and understanding yours is the first step to reconnecting.
1. Clairsentience — Physical Sensations
This is a gut feeling in the most literal sense. It might be a tingle at the top of your head when something is true. A wave of warmth. A bad taste in your mouth around someone who isn't right for you. A physical jolt.
Important distinction: Your intuition feels calm and grounded. If what you're experiencing is a surge of emotion — fear, grief, panic — that's your nervous system responding to what the intuition revealed. The emotion is real, but it's not the message itself. The message lives underneath it.
2. Claircognizance — Inner Knowing
This is a "download." Something just drops in and feels true. You don't know how you know it — you just do. There's no image, no voice, no physical sensation. Just a quiet, sure knowing.
This is probably the hardest to trust at first, especially for my high-achieving, logic-driven Fire Fam. Because it doesn't come with evidence. It just is.
3. Clairaudience — Inner Hearing
This is an internal voice or audible message that you hear inside your mind. Not external voices — an internal one. A clear, calm statement. "Don't take that job." "Call her." "This isn't right for you."
4. Clairvoyance — Mental Images
Visualizations, symbols, or images that appear in your mind's eye — especially during stillness or meditation. These are open to interpretation and are often symbolic rather than literal.
I'll share one of my own: during a recent meditation, I saw a gray cloud of smoke around my back and a small, scared bird. When I sat with it, the meaning felt clear. It was telling me something about where I'd been playing small and where I needed to call back my power.
You don't have to "be spiritual" for this to work for you. These are the languages your nervous system and soul use to communicate. Learning your primary language is one of the most powerful health investments you can make.
8 Ways to Start Connecting to Your Intuition Today
So how do you actually open the channel?
These are the practices I've personally leaned on — and that I guide my clients through in my work.
1. Create Stillness
You cannot hear a whisper in a hurricane. When you are constantly stimulated — phone, work, podcasts, noise — your intuition doesn't have room to come through. Stillness doesn't have to mean sitting cross-legged in silence. It can be a walk in nature without your phone. Washing dishes. Knitting. A puzzle. Any moment where you're giving your mind space to receive.
2. Practice Minimalism
Clutter — physical and digital — is static. When you clear your space, you create room for clarity. This is more than just tidying up. It's energetically removing what's stealing your attention and replacing it with calm.
3. Tap Into Your Imagination
Give yourself permission to be creative with no goal or outcome. Draw. Write. Move. Let whatever is inside you come out without judgment. This is intuition in motion.
4. Journal Without a Prompt
Not goal-setting journaling. Not gratitude lists. Just: How do I feel right now? Start writing and let what's actually there come through. You'll often surprise yourself.
5. Gather Past Proof
Think back. When have you had a feeling about something and been right? We all have these moments — we've just been trained to dismiss them as coincidence. Start collecting evidence of your own intuitive accuracy. It builds trust.
6. Keep Records of Your Daily Life
If emotions and body sensations feel slippery for you, try a more scientific approach: keep a simple daily log. Note what you did, how you felt, what happened. Over time, patterns will emerge. Your body is giving you data. You just have to start collecting it.
7. Use Affirmations as a Body Compass
Say something you know to be deeply true. Notice how it feels in your body — which of your four Clairs activates? Now say something false. Notice the difference. You're training your inner GPS. Once you know what yes and no feel like in your body, you can use that to navigate bigger decisions.
8. Shift Your Perspective
Sometimes the message you've been waiting for is on the other side of a new environment. Travel somewhere new. Try a different coffee shop. Talk to someone whose worldview challenges yours. Journal a story from a completely different angle. Physical and mental shifts create openings that routine closes off.
Why This Is a Health Issue (Not Just a Spiritual One)
I know some of you might be thinking: Shanon, this is my health podcast. What does intuition have to do with whether I'm eating well or not?
Everything. Literally everything.
When clients come to me struggling with binge eating, digestive issues, chronic inflammation, mysterious pain, constant fatigue — and they've already "tried everything" — the common thread isn't their macros or their meal timing. It's that they've been trying to fix a connection problem with a nutrition solution.
Your body speaks. Your soul speaks. And when you're not listening — when you're outsourcing your knowing to diet plans, external validation, or willpower — you will keep running into the same walls.
This is why my coaching program, Body and Soul Freedom, exists. It's the place where the science of nutrition and the wisdom of your inner world come together. We work through the body, the mind, and the soul — because you cannot have real, lasting food and body freedom if you're only working on one piece of the puzzle.
