Losing Your Ambitious Edge When Healing

I'm going to be honest with you about something that I don't think gets talked about enough in the wellness space.

When I was at the height of my success — the most "accomplished" version of Shanon on paper — I was also running on fumes, fueled by rage, and quietly falling apart on the inside.

And when I finally started to heal? I was terrified I would lose everything that had made me successful.

If you've ever felt that same fear — that healing means softening, and softening means slowing down, and slowing down means losing your edge — this post is for you.

Grab a coffee, settle in, and let me tell you what I've learned on the other side.

The Hustle That Built Everything (And Cost Me More Than I Knew)

When I started my private practice as a Registered Dietitian, I was a powerlifter with a chip on her shoulder, a master's degree, and a fire inside me that I genuinely thought was invincible.

I was working multiple jobs simultaneously — teaching 4 a.m. fitness classes, selling gym memberships, seeing nutrition clients in the evening, and still squeezing in my own workouts at 8 p.m. I wore hoodies that said "hustle harder."  I broke state records in powerlifting. I didn't just want to succeed — I needed to prove something.

And honestly? That drive worked.

I quadrupled my income in my first year of private practice.

Within five years, I had built a business that crossed a million dollars in revenue.

But here's what I didn't tell anyone at the time: that ambition was fueled by fear.

Fear of not being enough.

Fear that people who had doubted me would be right.

Fear of being overlooked — especially as a woman in a world that, in subtle but real ways, always seemed to hand the legacy to someone else.

I was burning on anger. And burning fast.

When Everything You Built Starts to Feel Empty

There came a point — one that I've seen several big-name influencers talk about recently, and one I wish someone had warned me about — where I had everything I had worked for, and I felt hollow.

I made the decision to close my business.

And I won't sugarcoat it: it was one of the most painful things I have ever done.

My ego crumbled.

My income plummeted.

People I thought were in my corner disappeared.

And I had to sit with the grief of hurting people who had depended on me, even though I knew deep down that the decision was right.

What I didn't expect was that this crumble would become the foundation of my best life.

The Fear That Healing Would "Break" My Drive

Here's the thing I kept circling back to during those two years of rebuilding:

If I heal the wound that fuels me, what's left?

I had built an empire off of something to prove. Letting go of that rage felt like letting go of my rocket fuel. I genuinely didn't know who Shanon was without the hustle, without the grind, without something to fight against.

This question — "Will I still have my edge if I heal?" — is something I hear from my clients too. Especially the high-achieving, driven, ambitious women who feel like their tenacity is inseparable from their trauma. Who have worked so hard for so long that rest feels like a threat.

I want to tell you what I found on the other side, because the answer surprised even me.

What Healing Actually Does to Your Ambition

You don't lose your edge. You upgrade it.

The difference I've noticed in myself is the distinction between relentlessness and perseverance. Relentlessness is willing to throw everything — your health, your relationships, your peace — at the altar of a goal. Perseverance is the ability to take it on the chin, hold space for yourself, and keep going without burning everything down in the process.

Relentlessness is fueled by a wound. Perseverance is fueled by wisdom.

I'm building again now. And yes, it's slower.

But this time, I'm enjoying the ride.

My foundation is solid.

My relationships — with my partner, my parents, my closest friends — are closer and more real than they have ever been.

Things that I never let myself have when I was in pure hustle mode.

Joy gets to be part of my everyday. And that joy?

That has become my new fuel.

What This Looked Like With Food, Too

The same thing happened in my relationship with food.

I used to be meticulous.

Meal prepping everything.

Weighing, measuring, following every rule to the letter.

I was afraid of what would happen if I let go. Afraid my body would change. Afraid I'd lose the control that made me feel safe.

When I finally released those food rules — slowly, messily, imperfectly — something unexpected happened. My body didn't spiral. It settled.

I started eating out. I started having dessert on a random Tuesday. I started trusting what my body was telling me instead of outsourcing every decision to an external rulebook.

And eventually, naturally, without willpower or white-knuckling, things balanced out.

Self-regulation kicked in when the rules stepped aside.

That's not magic — it's what happens when your nervous system finally feels safe.

Now I trust my body the same way I trust my intuition — from within, guided by something deeper than a meal plan or a macro calculator.

And I'll be honest with you: I feel more at home in my skin than I did when I was leaner, "more disciplined," and grinding every single day.

What You're Really Afraid Of (And Why It Doesn't Have to Come True)

If you're reading this and you're scared — scared that healing means becoming soft, that rest means laziness, that letting go of the hustle means losing yourself — I want to sit with you in that fear for a second.

I know that fear. I lived it.

But what I found on the other side is that you don't lose yourself.

You find yourself.

The part of you that's been buried under the performance, the productivity, the proving.

The part that knows how to receive love.

The part that can cry in front of your best friend.

The part that can let your mom take care of you when things get hard.

Those parts aren't weakness. They're the foundation everything else gets to be built on.

And your success? It's still coming. Actually — it gets to be better, because this time it's not costing you your health, your peace, or the people you love.

Ready to Heal Without Losing Your Edge? Let's Do This Together.

If this resonates with you — if you're a high-achiever who's exhausted from grinding, who's questioning the rules you've been following around food and your body, who wants to build a life that feels as good on the inside as it looks on the outside — I want to invite you into my world.

Body and Soul Freedom is my signature 1:1 coaching program. It's the exact container that carried me through my own transformation — from the hardcore, competitive, prove-it-to-everyone version of me, to the grounded, embodied, joyful woman I am today.

We work on your relationship with food, your body, and your soul. Because all three are connected, and you can't fully heal one without tending to the others.

Right now, you get to work one-on-one with me — and if you're ready to jump in, I don't want you to wait.

Not quite sure yet? That's okay too. A beautiful place to start is the Food Freedom Reset — my $27 offer that walks you through the foundational shifts that help you break free from food rules and start trusting your body again.

I just added more to it, and it is genuinely one of the best deals I've ever offered.

You don't have to choose between being ambitious and being well. That's the whole point. You get to be both — and actually enjoy the life you're building.

I'm rooting for you, Fire Fam. Always.

With so much love, Shanon 🔥
